Why tennis is great for your child’s physical and mental health

Children and teens are facing many new and difficult experiences. Issues such as school violence, bullying, social isolation, and even addiction are hitting youth hard.

As a consequence, kids are suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. The number of students who experienced at least one episode of depression during 2021 increased by almost a quarter million from the previous year.

Many specialists in child health are exploring the best ways to help struggling children. In addition to having supportive family, friends, and school communities, physical activity is essential to mental health.

The Paseo Club is a private social club in the Santa Clarita Valley that has supported youth, adults, and seniors in fitness, health, and well-being for twenty years. We offer several programs for kids and teens, including a comprehensive tennis program for children ages three through seventeen.

In this article, you will learn how and why tennis benefits kids' physical and mental health. Learn more by reading on!

IMG-7695How does tennis provide the opportunity to socialize?

For kids to manage stress and channel it into a growth experience, they must engage in experiences that give them the opportunity to socialize, move, and be present.

In a tennis clinic or group setting, there are other players to do drills with. This environment helps kids to socialize and enjoy some healthy competition. A friendly coach with an array of activities and games keeps a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

How does tennis give children opportunities to be physically active?

Tennis is a running sport — not even movement — but a running sport. If you’re not running after the ball, you should be bouncing “running” in place in order to get ready for the next ball.

It is one of the most physically active sports next to soccer and swimming because you are in constant motion. Keep in mind that in basketball, hockey, and other team sports, you frequently switch out players and bring in substitutes. In tennis, you play for two hours straight. Professional players in a Grand Slam play between 3.5-5 hour matches.

Tennis requires being physically active and focused. This state helps to release endorphins and make people feel more happy. This is the best pathway towards relaxation, which is critical for combatting stress and anxiety.

How does tennis improve concentration and support cognitive function?

Focus levels are very high in tennis since you are always evaluating the situation and ball. Observing the flight of the ball, the way the opponent hits the ball, and then focusing on hitting the ball yourself requires utmost concentration.

How does tennis support positive self-esteem?

The old formula is right — the harder you work, the more you get out of it. When kids begin to develop skills and strategies and win matches, their self-esteem goes up.

When this concept about hard work resulting in success crystallizes for young children and teens, they realize this concept can be applied to academics or anything else in life. Self-esteem can be “acquired” through diligent, focused work.

As kids grow older and face many challenges about peers, pop culture, academics, and more, they need healthy activities that nurture their well-being.

Tennis is a sport that helps to address many aspects of good health. Tennis provides young people with opportunities to socialize, be active, develop better cognitive function, and boost self-esteem.

The Paseo Club has opportunities for children ages three to seventeen years to learn and play tennis year-round. Whether your child is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, there are programs for them.

Classes taught by pros are available during the school year in the junior tennis program. Summer camp is June to August from 10 am - 3 pm. Extended care is available through the Kids Club in the mornings and afternoons.
