Many of us want to help our local communities through volunteering or supporting charities. But it is hard to know which organizations to aid and how to make time to get involved.
Lucky for you, the Paseo Club has made helping out locally that much easier.
Many of you know that the Paseo Club is not just a fitness center. The Paseo Club is a social club which means we prioritize our relationships with our members and the greater community of Santa Clarita.
One of the ways the club gets involved in the community is by teaming up with charitable organizations to host fundraisers.
In this article, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about our up-and-coming fundraiser, Paddle for the Battle, with the Michael Hoefflin Foundation.
You will learn what the Michael Hoefflin Foundation is, what happens at Paddle for the Battle, when it is, and how you can get involved.
What is the Michael Hoefflin Foundation (MHF)?
The Michael Hoefflin Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Santa Clarita. Its mission is to be a financial and emotional support for families who have children diagnosed with cancer.
The foundation was created by Sue and Chris Hoefflin after the passing of their young son, Michael, from brain cancer.
Although Michael struggled with his own health issues, he always expressed care and compassion for others. This kindness and selfless generosity became his family and friends' impetus to create the foundation.
Who does the MHF serve?
Families who live in the Santa Clarita Valley and the surrounding valleys and have children diagnosed with cancer are eligible to receive support from MHF.
Services vary according to the needs of the family but can include:
- Grocery and gas monetary assistance
- Information and referrals for care and support
- Family activities
- Support group meetings
- Counseling
- Academic tutoring
- Financial support
- Educational resources
MHF has served more than 800 families since its inception in 1995.
What is Paddle for the Battle?
Paddle for the Battle is a two-day pickleball event and fundraiser. The Paseo Club is hosting it for the second time after its immense success last year.
The fundraiser is available to the public and there are lots of ways to join in the fun.
- Pickleball players sign up for events and play round-robin style. Men’s doubles and women’s doubles play on Saturday. Sunday is for mixed doubles — men and women playing together.

- Mani-pedi
- Massage
- Painting and wine session
- Fitbit Luxe
- Pickleball paddle
- Tickets to the aquarium
- Meals out
Raffle tickets are for sale at the event (cash only) at 2 for $5, 6 for $10, or 20 for $20. Winners take home their prizes the day of, or at the MHF office during business hours.
- Eat a meal at our cafe, which will be open the entire weekend, 7:30 am - 6 pm. Alternately, pick up a premade sack lunch.
- Sign up to be a member of the Paseo Club and we will donate your initiation fee (the whole amount) to MHF. This is a value of between $125-$250, depending if you get a single, couple, or family membership.
- Donate. You can make a donation of any amount to MHF at any point during the weekend.
When is Paddle for the Battle?
The 2022 Paddle for the Battle is on the weekend of October 1st and 2nd from 7:30 am - 6 pm. It is open to the whole community, whether you are a Paseo member or not.
How can you get involved in Paddle for the Battle?
There is still limited sign-up available for pickleball. The cost is $40 per event. If you don’t play, come to cheer for the players, share a meal with friends, or check out the auction and raffle.
Final thoughts on Paddle for the Battle
The Michael Hoefflin Foundation is serving some of the most important members of our community — children with cancer and their families.
The foundation’s support, both financially and emotionally, is critical to these families so they can concentrate on helping their child get well.
Approximately 400 people are expected to come out for Paddle for the Battle this year. In 2021, Paddle for the Battle earned $12,000, which provided two months of gas and grocery gift cards to families who have a child in treatment for cancer.
The goal for 2022 is $18,000. This money will allow the foundation to support even more families with increased financial support or counseling sessions.
This fundraiser is a great way to team up with the Paseo Club and your friends and neighbors to make a difference — right in your very own community.
If you want to take advantage of the opportunity to put your initiation fee into supporting the foundation, this is the weekend to sign up for a Paseo Club membership.
