Top 7 factors to consider when choosing a day spa in the Santa Clarita Valley

September 20th, 2024 | 4 min. read

By Paseo Club Team

Going to the spa is not cheap. Whether you are doing a full day of treatments or selecting just one, it is hard to justify the expense as a necessity.

Yet, relaxing at the spa while being tended to by caring professionals is one of life’s greatest luxuries. And who doesn’t need a little luxury every now and again?

One way to appease your pocketbook (and perhaps an irate spouse) is to do your research. You want to ensure your experience at a spa is as revitalizing as possible and lack for nothing.

The Paseo Club is a social club in Santa Clarita that offers fitness, tennis, pickleball, Pilates, and swimming facilities to residents of all ages. We also offer several amenities, including a childcare center, a pro shop, a cafe and clubhouse, and an onsite spa.

Although we’d love to see you at our spa getting a massage or facial, we recognize it is not the spa for everyone. We want you to feel informed about what to consider when you look for spa services at any spa.

In this article, we will aim to be as transparent as possible and give you insightful tips on what to consider when you choose a spa in the Santa Clarita Valley.

1. The Menu

The first step to assess if a spa is a good fit for you is to look at what services they offer. The majority of spas have several options available, but in case you are looking for a specific type of treatment, make sure the spa offers it.

Spa services typically include facials, massage, and body scrubs and wraps. Additional services that may be available include nail care, hair care, soaking tubs, and specialized treatments for men, teens, and/or pregnant people.

You can always contact a spa if you know you want a spa treatment but aren’t sure what type of service you want. Explain what issue you would like help with and see what they suggest. Some examples are:

  • Help to minimize wrinkles
  • A massage for sore muscles
  • Skincare to reduce sun damage
  • Side-by-side treatments with a loved one or friend

When you plan your next trip to a spa, consider your budget and goals. Pricing can be similar from spa to spa, but occasionally it varies wildly.

Once you have identified what treatment(s) you want, look online to learn the costs at the spas in your area. If the pricing is not obvious, you can call the spa. Some businesses choose not to publicize their pricing, which may indicate they service a higher-end clientele.

Many spas offer seasonal deals or membership options that can further improve your experience. Seasonal deals will have deadlines for use and can be a great way to get free bonus add-ons or discounted services. Membership is a worthwhile option if you want to attend a spa consistently because the cost of services drops with your membership.

Remember to budget 15-20% of your spa bill as a tip to your practitioner. That is standard in the industry and a way of expressing gratitude directly to your provider.

Who you see at the spa determines so much about your experience. Doing a little bit of research about the providers can help you discover who will be the best fit for you. You can request information about the following topics.

  • Any areas of specialization
  • What products do they use
  • If they can customize services
  • How many years they have practiced
  • What are the steps for the treatment you want to have
  • Where they were trained, and what certifications they have

4. The Ambiance

A critical part of going to a spa is to soak up the ambiance. The spa’s environment provides a respite from the noise, clutter, and dirt often found at home and work. A well-appointed spa should be visually, auditorily, and aromatically pleasing.

The Visual presentation

    • Tasteful art
    • Natural light
    • Houseplants
    • Clean and tidy
    • Softly painted walls
    • Comfortable furniture

Auditory presentation

    • Staff uses soft, calming voices
    • Peaceful music in the background
    • Diffused noise from outside (traffic, road work, people walking by, etc.)

Aromatic presentation

    • Absence of harsh cleaners or synthetic fragrances
    • Aromatic essential oil diffuser to naturally perfume the air

The global skincare industry is valued at $109.71 billion as of 2023, which means there are A LOT of products on the market. Unless you are a skincare nerd, it is difficult to keep up with the latest trends.

Part of the joy of being a spa customer is to receive care from a knowledgeable practitioner who has done their homework on the safest and most effective products available.

If you have sensitive skin, an allergy, a favorite product, or any other preference, such as vegan, organic, or cruelty-free products, speak to the practitioner before booking an appointment.

6. The Location

It is ideal to be in close proximity to your favorite spa. However, a spa with great services at fair prices can be worth the time and effort of a longer drive. Consider how often you will attend a spa and how much time and energy you want to budget for travel to and from.

7. The Reviews

Reading online reviews of an establishment can be hit or miss.

Reviews can be a safe public platform to share about experiences. It can help you get an inside perspective on the quality of a business that might be hard to acquire elsewhere. However, some reviews are fake, deceptive, or manipulated.

Take online reviews with a grain of salt, but lean heavily into getting reviews from people you know and trust — friends, family, co-workers and/or neighbors.
