Top 2022-2023 after-school activities in Santa Clarita Valley

 

Though the hot days of summer are at their peak, kids will soon return to school and their autumn schedules. And you need a plan!

 

Choosing what after-school activities to get your child involved in can be daunting. It also takes hours and hours to do the research — something you do not have a surplus of. 

 

That is why we gathered all the information about programs and classes in Santa Clarita Valley into one organized list for you.

By the time you have read this article, you will know what programs are available, when they begin, and their cost.

 

These programs are listed alphabetically and have been selected based on their location, quality, and the provider’s experience. 

Childcare programs in SVC

1. Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley


The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley has four locations — two in Newhall, one in Canyon Country, and one in Castaic. 

 

Boys and Girls Club promotes: 

 

 

Membership to the club is only $60 per year for your first child and $45 for each additional child. But no one is denied membership based on their ability to pay.

 

Membership gives your child access to the after-school programs at one of the four clubhouses. They provide homework help, sports, STEM projects, games, and a healthy snack. 

 

Transportation from school to the Newhall or Sierra Vista Clubhouses cost $225 per month for the first child and $100 for each additional child. 

 

Generally, the club is open Monday-Friday from 2–7 pm during the school year and from 7 am to 7 pm during vacation periods. Early care and summer programs are also available.

 

2. City of Santa Clarita


The city of Santa Clarita's child and teen after-school program offers a wealth of resources for young people in the community. These programs provide care during the school year at the Canyon Country Community Center and the Newhall Community Center.

After-School Program for Youth

The after-school program is for youth 5-12 years old. There is homework help, reading time, crafts, games, and outdoor and indoor sports. 

 

It is open from 2:30-6 pm. Monday-Friday. Session one begins on August 15 and goes through December 15. 

 

It costs $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. It is open for registration now. 

Teen Experience Program 

The teen experience program supports personal and career development, leadership, and healthy living skills. Teens enjoy arts, academic assistance, sports, and community projects.

 

Teens are given free access pass to Newhall Community Center or Canyon Country Community Center.

 

Session one of the program runs from August 15-December 16. It is for teens between the ages of 13-17. The hours are Monday-Friday, 3:00-6:30 pm. There is no fee.

 

3. Ekata Training Center


Ekata Training Center is the only state-licensed childcare program in Santa Clarita that offers behavioral and physical training.

Its mission is to provide a holistic education through physical and artistic expression. They focus on initiating consciousness and empathy within the child as they interface with their families, communities, and the world.

UCLA Professor Edward Monaghan developed the after-school program. He specializes in kinesthetic learning and has taught programs in LAUSD and Saugus Union School district.  He teaches mindfulness and cognition to children and teachers.

After school program is available from when school ends up to 6:30 pm.

4. La Petit Academy and Tutor Time


La Petit Academy and Tutor Time are after-school programs that provide play-based learning for your child. They focus on free play, homework support, and STEM projects. 

 

They keep parents abreast of their child’s activities through daily updates on the SproutAbout app. Transportation from your child’s school to their facilities is available at many local schools. 

 

Tuition is discussed once parents meet with a director for a virtual or in-person tour.

 

5. Rise


Rise after-school programs opened 13 years ago. They are partnered with 35 schools across California. 

 

They offer after-school enrichment and academic support on-site at local public elementary schools. 

 

The before-school program is open from 6:30-7:45 am and includes breakfast. The after-school program begins immediately at the end of the school day (including minimum days) until 6:15 pm. 

 

The student-to-staff ratio is 14:1. 

 

Pricing varies from $295-510 per month depending on the number of days your child attends and if they also use the before-school care or not.



6. Sunshine Day Camp before and after school care


Sunshine Day Camp brings the spirit of summer to the children in their care year-round. Kids participate in crafting, arts, singing, and play. 

 

They have a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio. They offer Homework Club at no additional cost for kids in grades 1-6 who would like support in completing their school assignments. 

 

Morning care is from 6:30-8:30 am. Care for kinders begins at noon. Older kids join in at 3 and care goes on until 6:00 pm.

 

They are based at multiple locations.

Pricing for kindergarteners at 5 days per week is $158 per week. For kids in grades 1-6 who attend 5 days per week, the cost is $142 per week. 

 

7. The One TaeKwanDo


The One TaeKwanDo is a licensed after-school care provider that offers homework support from licensed teachers, STEAM education, Taekwondo lessons, and free play. 

 

Transportation is available from four Santa Clarita locations and one location in Castaic.

 

The registration fee is $150 and includes a uniform, t-shirt, and patches. The cost of the program depends on how many days your child attends.

 

  • 3 days/week - $95/week
  • 4 days/week - $110/week
  • 5 days/week - $120/week

 

They offer full-day camps when school is not in session.

 

Equestrian after-school programs in SVC

8. Gilchrest Farm Horseriding


Gilchrest Farm offers a holistic approach to horsemanship where the child’s relationship with the horse is the priority

 

They offer English, Western, and Driving lessons. They work with beginners through competitive students. 

 

Classes are $40-$55 with discounts for paying for a series of classes. You can also pay for the Lease/Lesson program which allows for the student to ride independently in addition to having a lesson. The pricing for that program varies but begins at $400 per month.

 

9. Jump for Joy Equestrian


Jump for Joy Equestrian is based in the hills of Valencia. The facility is on eight acres and has four arenas, one that is covered. 

 

Instructor Linda Luger specializes in Hunters/Jumpers and Dressage. 

 

She works with beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, including those that compete. Lessons are available to children, teens, and adults. Ages 5 and up.

 

Pricing for a 30-minute lesson cost $45 and 1-hour lessons are $60.

 

10. Santa Clarita Valley Equestrian 


Santa Clarita Valley Equestrian instructs children through adults daily. 

 

The prices for lessons are: 

 

  • English or Western riding: $40 for 1 hour and 45 minutes  for 18 and under
  • Group lesson in jumping: $45 for 1 ½ hour  for 18 and under
  • Gymkhana (Including Barrel Racing): $40 for 1 ½ hour for all ages

 

You can also hire an instructor for 30-minute private lessons, go on trail rides, or get roping lessons.

 

Fine art after-school programs for kids

11. Drawn 2 Art


Drawn 2 Art teaches children ages four through adults step-by-step how to draw and paint beautiful works of art. The instructor offers these classes as a counterbalance to today’s busy world to create “quietude and (a) peaceful time to reflect upon beauty and creation.”

 

The program is tailored to the student's skills, dexterity, and artistic experience. 

 

Students can learn using:

  • Watercolor paints
  • Acrylic paints

  • Various drawing mediums

 

Classes are taught year-round and seasonal camps are available as well. 

 

For ages 4-6, classes are 1 hour long and the tuition is $108 a month. For kids 7+ tuition is $160 a month. There is also a one-time new student registration fee.

12. Lidya’s Art


Lidya’s Art provides instructional classes in sketching, drawing, and painting to kids, teens, and adults. Lidya has won numerous national and international awards for her art.

 

In drawing class students use pencils, charcoal, Conte, oil pastels, and colored pencils to learn:

 

  • Perspective
  • Proportion
  • Composition
  • Spaces and shades

 

In painting class students use mixed media, gouache, pastels, acrylic, watercolor, and oil painting to learn:

 

  • How to mix colors
  • Use of brush strokes
  • How to make a composition

 

Classes for kids or teens are 1 ½ hours per week and cost $80 for drawing and $160 for painting. Teens can also choose to do a 3-hour painting class and that is $300 per month.

 

13. Picasso’s Playmates


Picasso’s Playmates is a full-service art studio for all children, teens, and adults. Students receive a free introductory lesson.

 

They offer:

 

  • Parent participation classes  
  • Fine art drawing and painting 
  • Seasonal camps 
  • Birthday party events
  • Custom artwork  

 

They have studios in Newhall and Acton.

Gymnastics and tumbling after-school programs

14. Cal Elite


Cal Elite is a 6,200-square-foot training and activity center for kids in Santa Clarita. They offer programs for babies as young as 4 months through to teens. 

 

They offer classes in:

 

  • Gymnastics
  • Ninja Zone (a fusion of gymnastics, martial arts, obstacle training, and freestyle movement)
  • Open Gym
  • Tumbling

 

They also offer a Parent Night’s Out and summer camps. 

 

Classes cost between $61-105 per month.

15. Hugo’s Gym Fitness


Hugo’s Gym Fitness has classes Monday-Friday from 9 am-7 pm. They offer classes to children as young as 18 months old. They teach kids of all ages as well as adults. 

 

A fun variety of classes are taught at Hugo’s, including aerial silks.

16. My Gym


My Gym is a center for tumbling and movement based in Valencia. They offer parent and me classes for their youngest students and independent classes for older kids. 

 

Classes include:

  • Ninja Training (relays, conditioning exercises, obstacle courses, and games)

My gym’s classes cost $129 every four weeks for one class per week. 

 

Martial arts after-school programs in SVC

17. Dream Martial Arts and Fitness


Dream Martial Arts and Fitness teach ​​kids mixed martial arts and self-defense in the form of Pankration. Pankration is a combination of boxing, wrestling, and other fighting arts, such as Jiu-Jitsu. 

 

Coach Jeff Martin took gold in the 2020 No-Gi Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF), Gold in Gi at Jiu Jitsu World League California Open 2021, and Gold in Gi at NAGA Las Vegas 2021.

 

He teaches classes to kids Monday through Thursday at 4:15 pm, 5:15 pm, and 6 pm.

 

The cost of lessons are: 

 

  • $80/month for one day per week
  • $129/month for 2 days per week
  • $159/month unlimited classes

 

18. Ekata


The Ekata Training Center is a family-focused facility that specializes in the mind and body connection. They have a well-equipped gym and offer top-level martial arts training in:

They take students from ages 3 through teens. Junior martial arts classes teach kids to control their movements and behavior and to learn social skills.

19. Iron Fist Martial Arts


Iron Fist Martial Arts offers classes to children as young as four. They also teach older kids, teens, and adults. Their mission “is to help our students become more successful in life through their practice, knowledge, and discipline of the Martial Arts.”

20. One TaeKwanDo


One TaeKwanDo offers classes to children ages 7 to teens. They teach TaeKwonDo through the five topics of forms, self-defense, breaking, sparring, and knowledge.

 

Their classes intend to help your child:

 

  • Develop perseverance and integrity
  • Improve self-esteem and develop confidence
  • Increase focus and concentration

 

Class cost is $169 per month with family discounts for multiple family members.

21. Victory Martial Arts


Victory Martial Arts offers one free private lesson per person. They teach preschoolers, kids, teens, families, and adults. Their emphasis is on teaching your child the values of respect, confidence, and discipline. 

 

They help inspire their students to:

 

  • Do better in school
  • Have increased self-respect and respect for authority
  • Know self-defense
  • Be aware of their surroundings
  • Prevent bullying
  • Be healthy

 

The preschooler program is designed for ages 3-6. It focuses on basic martial arts skills to reinforce values such as respect, confidence, and discipline.

Tuesdays/Thursdays 4:30-5:10 pm

 

Kids Program is for girls and boys ages 7-12. It is designed to increase confidence, respect, and friendships while getting physically fit and developing a positive self-image. The highly trained, certified instructors create engaging classes by celebrating achievements, expecting hard work, and encouraging growth!

Tuesdays/Thursdays 3:45pm-4:10pm

Performing arts and dance after-school programs

22. Vibes Performing Arts


Vibes Performing Arts is a center for learning multiple forms of artistic expression. If your child has an interest in music, dance, or acting, then this is the place for them. They even have celebrity instructors that teach some of the classes.

23. Elite Dance Studios


Elite Dance Studios has been offering instruction to dancers of Santa Clarita for over 15 years. The owner, Jaqueline Hill, has received many local awards, including, the California Legislature Assembly Certificate of Recognition in Honor of Dedication and Commitment to the Community. 

 

They teach ages 2-year-olds through adults. Classes are offered in:

 

  • Jazz

24. Dance Studio 84


Dance Studio 84 has been teaching kids and adults for over forty years. The majority of instructors have been there for 10 years or more. Their mission is “to introduce and pass on our love of dance to our students.”

 

Your child can get involved in spring recitals, the December Nutcracker ballet, holiday variety shows, competitions, and community events including expos, concerts, high school dance team shows, and more.

 

They offer dance classes in:

Sports and Fitness after-school programs in SVC

25. AYSO


AYSO serves Saugus, Canyon Country, Newhall-Valencia, and Castaic providing soccer training and games to children of the area.

 

They offer League and All-Stars Inter-Regional play for U10, U12, and U14 divisions in post-season play. During the regular fall season, they provide soccer for U16 and U19 divisions in inter-regional play.

 

They also offer a club program for kids who want a more competitive experience. This program allows players to compete with the top teams in Southern California while maintaining affordable fees for families.

26. Castaic Regional Sports Complex


The Castaic Regional Sports Complex offers a few sports programs for kids of Santa Clarita Valley.

27. Legacy Volleyball


Legacy Volleyball gives volleyball clinics to the boys and girls of Santa Clarita Valley.

​​The girls' program is for girls in 3rd-6th grade. It begins on September 9th and finishes on Sunday, November 20th — 11 weeks in total. The clinic is Fridays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm and Sundays from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. 

 

The cost for the clinic is $375.

 

The boys' program is for boys in 6th-12th grade. It is held on August 22, August 24, August 29th, August 31st, and September 7th, Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 pm.

 

The cost for the clinic is $200.

 

Legacy hosts a developmental league and a competitive club league with 14 girls club teams and 5 boys club teams.

 

Tryouts for boys ages 12 through 18 are on September 10th and are for all skill levels. Tryouts for girls between the ages of 10 to 14 are on October 1 and are for all skill levels. Make-up tryouts for 15 and 16-year-olds will be sometime in mid-October.

28. Paseo Club


Paseo Club is a social club based in Valencia. They offer several programs for adults, teens, and kids.

 

    • Kids Fitness Certification: This class is for kids ages 12-13 years old. Participants meet for multiple classes with trainer Jodi Broz to learn gym etiquette and proper body mechanics while lifting weights. This costs $199 for the session. The sessions are either 6 45-minute classes or 8 30-minute classes. Inquire at the club for when the next series begins.
    • Kids Fitness Class: This is a fun class designed to create comradery and friendly competition with other kids. The class involves relay races, games, obstacle courses, and drills using cones, ladders, and hurdles. This class is free to members.
  • Martial Arts: Victory Martial Arts is teaming up with Paseo to offer martial to kids ages 3-8. Classes are twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:15 pm. Kids learn how to get fit while building their confidence and self-image. $103 per month. 
  • Pickleball: Paseo offers group lessons to kids in pickleball. The cost is $25-30 per lesson, depending if there are three or four participants.
  • Private training: Paseo offers personal training for children ages 8 and up. This can help your child learn how to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. Others students who are athletes use this service for training in the off-season and want to get fit for their specific sports. The cost is between $75-95 per class.
  • Swim lessons: Dorado Swim runs the swim program and has beginner to advanced groups for ages 5 and up.

 

  • Private: 4 Pack - $210.00 and 8 Pack - $400.00
  • Semi-Private: 4 Pack - $140.00 (Per swimmer) and 8 Pack - $240.00 (Per swimmer)
  • Group (3-5 Swimmers): 8 Pack - $240.00 (Each Swimmer)

 

Kids who want a taste of competition can get evaluated for the swim team. There are competitive swimmers as young as five years old and goes up to people in their 20s.
Swimmers compete in meets that include other sanctioned clubs across Southern California. As swimmers get faster and earn “cuts,” they begin qualifying for higher-level meets from Junior Olympics up to Sectionals, Junior Nationals, Nationals, and Olympic Trials.

  • Teen fitness classes: Teens 14 and up can participate in all group exercise classes. This is free to members.
  • Tennis: After-school Junior Tennis Academy is taught to students of all ages. Kids are placed in classes based on their ratings. Classes for younger children are $21-25 per lesson depending if you are a member or not and if you are paying for lessons singly or in bulk. For older kids and children competing in tennis, the cost varies between $42-70 per lesson.

29. Santa Clarita Sports Center


Santa Clarita Sports Center provides younger kids of Santa Clarita the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of soccer. Classes are available for children between 18 months and twelve years of age. 

 

Their convenient class times provide families with options to accommodate multiple children. Look at the class schedule to find the time that works best for you. 

 

Class for Lil Kickers is for 18-month-olds-10-year-olds and is $180 for a 10-class session. Skills Institute is for 5-12-year-olds and is $210 for a 10-class session. Each class meets one time per week. 

 

Free trial classes are offered to see if the center is a good fit for your budding athlete. 

 

30. Santa Clarita youth baseball


Santa Clarita youth baseball offers baseball practice and games to boys and girls at the Castaic Sports Complex.

 

Kids ages 4-13 can join a league and enjoy the benefits of organized youth baseball. Getting your child involved in baseball can:

 

  • Gets kids out of the house and away from electronic devices

  • Improves hand-eye coordination

  • Teaches about the importance of teamwork

  • Helps kids to make friends outside of school

  • Promotes patience and focus 

 

The fall season runs from September 10th through November 12th. Registration closes on August 18th so don't delay! 

 

As a nonprofit organization, they can offer low-cost programs.

 

  • Baseball 101 (Tee-Ball) Ages 4-5: $175

  • Rookie League Ages 5-7: $200

  • Minor League Ages 7-9: $225

  • Major League Ages 10-13: $250 

  • Volunteer Fee: $50 (Refundable if a parent/guardian volunteers during the season)

31. Starting 5 Training Facility


Starting 5 Training Facility is in Santa Clarita. It offers programs to children from kindergarten through 12th grade to learn the sport of basketball. They have developmental training and league teams. 

 

  • Developmental Training cost $160.00/month plus a $40.00 sign-up fee. The player is given a workout shirt and an S5 reversible jersey. 
  • The Shootout is a fun-focused league that helps kids develop a love for basketball. It is a 7-week league with playoffs. It begins September 30 and registration is open. $150 per player.
  • Junior Shootout is a league for kids in kindergarten-3rd grade. Kids enjoy all the same quality training as the older ones but get to practice on lowered baskets. The seven-week program is $150 per player. Begins on August 5.

 

32. The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center


The Cube is a skate school for kids of all ages.

 

  • Tots is designed for beginning skaters aged 3-5 and under. Test maneuvers are broken down into smaller parts so they can be easily learned and mastered. This is a fun-filled class for beginners.
  • Pre-Alpha is a beginning-level class for skaters 16 and younger. A step-by-step progression of skills helps your child learn to be fast and fun.
  • Alpha - Freestyle is for skaters 16 and younger. This class teaches the progression through basic levels of foundational skating skills.
  • Pre-Hockey Skating is for the child who wants to play hockey but needs to learn how to skate first. Students learn hockey stance, stride, knee bends, and other necessary basics. 
  • Little Kings Academy focuses on the techniques needed to play hockey, emphasizing proficiency and agility on the ice. Sticks and pucks are used and full gear is required. Students need to have completed the Little Kings Program, Pre-Hockey, or Pre-Alpha Class.
  • Jump and Spin class is offered at four different levels — intro, intermediate, advanced, and advanced spin. 

 

The fall session is August 15th - October 15th (No Classes: 8/20, 9/2 - 9/3, 9/5 - 9/10) and runs for eight weeks of classes in total.

33. Vista Valencia Golf Course


Vista Valencia Golf Course offers a junior academy golf program year-round. The program emphasizes the short game, irons, chipping, shot selection, sportsmanship, and strategy.

 

The fall session will begin at the beginning of September. Interested parents need to speak with Brad Gallagher, the director of instruction, for more information.

Swimming

32. Paseo Club


The Paseo Club is a comprehensive fitness center and social club. They have a junior-Olympic pool that is kept at a comfortable 82 degrees year-round. El Dorado runs their swim program and offers beginner to advanced lessons for ages 5 and up.

 

  • Private lessons: 4 Pack - $210.00 and 8 Pack - $400.00
  • Semi-Private lessons: 4 Pack - $140.00 (Per swimmer) and 8 Pack - $240.00 (Per swimmer)
  • Group lessons (3-5 Swimmers): 8 Pack - $240.00 (Per swimmer)

33. Santa Clarita Aquatic Center


Santa Clarita Aquatic Center is run by the city of Santa Clarita. They have swim programs for youth including:

 

  • Competitive stroke instruction for kids ages 6-17 that focuses on strokes, starts, turns, and finishes. This is a four-week program.
  • Synchronized swim team is a form of artistic swimming that involves rhythmical water movement performed to music. The front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke are taught.
