Top activities for seniors at the Paseo Club

By Jen Azevedo

We all know that being physically active is critical to staying healthy at all stages of our lives.

But this is especially true for senior citizens.

Research shows that active seniors live longer, happier, and higher quality lives compared to their sedentary counterparts.

Physical fitness has many additional benefits:

  • Elevates the mood
  • Increases heart health
  • Increases bone density
  • Improves mental health
  • Improves balance, thereby lessening the chance of falling
  • Facilitates social connections which foster a sense of community

But a 68-year-old body is not the same as a 38-year-old-body. Special considerations must be accounted for to keep seniors fit but also safe.

The Paseo Club is a social club in the Santa Clarita Valley that brings people together from all walks of life to work out, socialize, and have fun.

In this article, we will tell you what the best activities are for seniors at the Paseo Club. You will learn about fitness classes, court games, and social events.

Top activities for seniors

Classes

The fitness classes listed below are low-impact, great for increasing mobility, and are lots of fun.

Liquid Cardio

Liquid Cardio is Paseo’s water aerobics class. Members do aerobic and weighted movements while enjoying the outdoor pool. This class is great for seniors because there is no impact, which makes it easy on the joints, and participants can go at their own pace. This class is taught 6 days per week.

Beginning and intermediate yoga

These classes are great for seniors because it is a mind-body exercise that helps bring a feeling of calm and centeredness to the practitioner. Yoga poses help build strength, flexibility, and balance. Almost all poses can scale to meet the abilities of the person. Yoga is taught daily.

Pilates stretch
This class is held on Sundays. Pilates stretch is complementary practice for tennis players, golfers, swimmers, runners and cyclists, and anyone else who puts their body through repetitive movements. Pilates adds core strength and stability and increases mobility in the spine, hips, and shoulders.

All-level Pilates

This class helps people to create long, lean muscles and improves posture by mobilizing your spine through several ranges of motion using the reformer Pilates machine.

Pilates mat

Pilates mat class is available Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Pilates helps people to have better core strength, mobility, and posture. This class is done on a yoga mat on the floor.

Total body

This class is for seniors who are used to being active and are looking to increase their resistance training. Members get a great full-body workout and burn fat and build muscle. It is taught four times per week, Monday through Thursday.

Cardio strength

Cardio strength is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) class that combines cardio to elevate your heart rate and muscle conditioning exercises to build strength. This class is taught six mornings and two evenings per week. We recommend it for very fit seniors who are accustomed to a higher pace class.

To see a list of all fitness classes, a calendar of when they are, and to sign-up for a class, you can go to the fitness calendar.

If you are new to the Paseo Club or are returning to exercising after a break getting a fitness assessment may be the best place to start.

All new members are given one FREE initial fitness assessment. The assessment will tell you what your fitness level is, what your strengths are, and where you need to focus.

Based on your fitness level, the instructor can make recommendations of what classes you might enjoy most and are of the appropriate level for you.

Court activities

Tennis and pickleball are excellent games for developing agility, strength, and cardiovascular health. They are also a great way to visit with friends and to make new connections with other players.

The Paseo Club has 12 tennis and 11 pickleball courts. Both tennis and pickleball are games that can be played at all ages in life. Paseo has members playing on the courts who are as young as three and as mature as 80.

If you want to learn tennis or pickleball, or need a refresher course after a long hiatus, the best place to start is with one of our small group or private beginner classes.

Paseo has dozens of seniors who play on the courts, so there is no shortage of opponents available in the 65+ age range.

Social events

The Paseo Club is not your run-of-the-mill fitness club or gym.

The Paseo Club is a social club with lively events happening every single week. Whether it is Dive-In movie night, a tennis round robin, or a charity event for a local cause, there is always an opportunity to get together with other members.

Wine Down Wednesday (most popular)

One of the most popular events for seniors (and others) is Wine Down Wednesday. At WDW, there is live music, food, cocktails, and wine. It is an enjoyable way to celebrate making it to the middle of the week.

Taco Tuesday (most festive)

Every Tuesday there is a full selection of tacos and beer to enjoy. Special drinks are made at the bar each week. Tacos are available starting at 6 pm and are served until 9 pm.

Saturday Morning Brunch (most leisurely)

After a full week, nothing is better than a long leisurely brunch at the Paseo Club’s cafe. French toast, pancakes, and omelets are typical fare but the chef does new and delectable dishes each week. Bloody Marys and mimosas are available.

What activity is best for you?

If you aren’t sure what activity is best for you, you can come to one and try it out. All members are always welcome. In fact, part of the fun is having members of all ages visiting and socializing together.
