Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT vs CrossFit (What's the difference?)

September 14th, 2022 | 5 min. read

By Jen Azevedo

There are dozens of training programs available for gym, studio, or home workouts. The methods vary according to whether they are bodyweight or use equipment, are high or low impact, the degree of intensity, and many other factors.

You may have heard terms such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or CrossFit. But what do they mean?

Paseo Club has launched its new fitness program, Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT. It was developed to offer demanding workouts in a friendly and upbeat group environment.

Crossfit is a similar training system. But there are some differences between the two programs as well.

In this article, we will compare and contrast Paseo’s Tribe Extreme HIIT with Crossfit. You will learn what each program’s emphasis is, its pros and cons, and the costs.

Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT

What is Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT?

Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT is a group class offered to members of the Paseo Club that utilizes a high-intensity interval training approach. The workouts are tough, but the results are awesome.

For people wanting to get into shape quickly, this program could be the one for you.

What is the emphasis on in Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT?

Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT emphasizes full-body workouts using both bodyweight and free weight exercises. Workouts involve short bursts of intense exercise alternated with recovery periods. Each workout builds on the last workout. There is a workout assessment that is performed in week one and week six so people can see how much faster and stronger they have become.

Is Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT competitive?

Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT is a program that challenges you to finish prescribed workouts for time or to work with a team to achieve group success. You can be competitive with yourself, or with the team you are training with.

What style of training does Tribe use?

Tribe uses different training methods. Some workouts are AMRAPs (as many rounds as possible) for a set amount of time, while others are for time (FT) where there is a prescribed workout, and you record how long the entire workout takes you to complete.

CrossFit

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a fitness program that focuses on a combination of cardio, strength training, and gymnastics. It was invented by Greg Glassman, in 2000, in Santa Cruz, California.

CrossFit emphasizes varied movements, so most workouts are new each day. They use different rep schemes, loads, and time domains.

That doesn’t mean the workouts are random — CrossFit’s programming is strategically designed so you’re always challenged and you never get bored.

What is the emphasis on CrossFit?

CrossFit is strength-based, HIIT-based, and endurance-based.

Is CrossFit competitive?

Cross fit is very competitive. Local, regional, and country-wide competitions do exist for high-level athletes. There is even an annual world's fittest man and woman competition.

While some local CrossFit gyms (or “boxes” as they are known) are geared toward younger, stronger athletes and can be very competitive, others are welcoming to people of all skill levels and have programs for teens through seniors.

What style of training does CrossFit use?

CrossFit uses many training methods. Generally, the class is broken down into periods of mobilization, warm-up, the Workout of the Day (WOD), some strength training or auxiliary work, and then a cool down.

Training schemes for the WOD can include:

  • (R)FT: (Rounds) for time
  • AMRAPs: As many rounds as possible
  • EMOMs: Every minute on the minute prescribed exercises are performed. Can also be every 2, 4, 8, minutes, etc.
  • Tabatas: 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest for four minutes
  • ERFT: Every round for time prescribed exercises are performed
  • Ascending and Descending: Rep schemes increase or decrease as you advance through the WOD
  • Death by Reps: A popular scheme where you must do the workout with ascending reps until time runs out or you can no longer do the movement

Do you use equipment in CrossFit?

CrossFit uses lots of different types of equipment. In fact, some equipment has been invented just for CrossFit. Here are the most commonly used pieces of equipment:

  • Olympic barbells with weighted plates
  • Rowing machines
  • Climbing ropes
  • (Assault) bikes
  • Pull-up bars
  • Jump ropes
  • Dumbbells
  • Kettlebells
  • Skiergs

Is CrossFit best for certain individuals?

CrossFit is best for younger athletes and people with good joints. But movements can scale, and it is not unusual to see people in their forties, fifties, and even sixties doing CrossFit.

What are the pros of CrossFit?

CrossFit has gained popularity with the World's Fittest Man and Woman competition. It has a large community all over the world. You can travel to almost any country and find a “box” and instantly meet friendly, like-minded people.

Although CrossFit is a newer approach to fitness, it is an effective one. WODs can be as short as 10 minutes, but they will guarantee you a challenging, sweat-inducing experience.

Workouts are great for building strength, endurance, and cardio capacity. There are many different types of movements that are used, so there is always something new to learn — Olympic lifting, handstands, muscle-ups, and more.

What are the cons?

People who do Crossfit are often doing complicated movements and using heavier weights. Because of this, there is a higher risk of injury. If people rush through a workout to get a fast finish time and do not pay attention to good form, they can hurt themselves.

What does CrossFit cost?

CrossFit gyms have a monthly fee of $100-$300, depending on the gym. This fee usually covers unlimited classes. Some gyms offer limited class options or packaged deals for a discounted rate.

Can you get the same results with Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT as in CrossFit?

You can get into great shape by using either fitness program. They both follow a high-intensity design that reliably builds muscle, burns fat, and elevates metabolic activity.

Final thoughts on Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT vs CrossFit

Although both systems use functional strength moves and are high-intensity-based, CrossFit and Paseo Tribe are slightly different.

Crossfit stresses more heavy lifting and gymnastics. These movements can be difficult to learn and take hours of practice. They also have a higher risk factor for injuries.

Paseo Tribe Extreme HIIT employs a similar workout system but keeps the movements more accessible to participants.
