If you love being active, you know nothing is worse than being sidelined due to injury or illness. Whether it is a simple ankle sprain or a rotator cuff surgery that lands you in the OR, there are a wide range of issues that can crop up in your life.
Physical rehabilitation, or rehab, refers to the process of recovering from an injury, illness, or surgery to restore full strength and range of motion. This process can take weeks to months, depending on your condition.
Scaling your movements to minimize aggravating the healing areas while slowly building strength and mobility is essential to returning to your former abilities.
Many people turn to the gym or yoga class to rehab. But what you may not realize is that water can be your best friend to get you back on your feet.
The Paseo Club is a social club in the Santa Clarita Valley offering fitness, Pilates, swimming, tennis, and pickleball programs.
In this article, you will learn why a rehab program is critical to your recovery, the benefits of rehabbing in water, and why the Paseo Club’s water aerobics class, Liquid Cardio, can be a great choice for you.
Why is a rehab program important when you are recovering from an injury?
When you are injured or have undergone a medical procedure, what you can do is limited. You have less flexibility, strength, and endurance. Rehabbing will help you heal better and restore your body to its former capacity.
A rehabilitation program is crucial for recovery from an injury for several reasons:
Manage pain: Alleviate pain and discomfort associated with the injury.
Heal properly: Rehab guides the healing process, ensuring the injured area recovers correctly and completely.
Restore function: Regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the affected area.
Prevent re-injury: Strengthen the injured area and surrounding tissues, reducing the risk of future injuries.
Receive education: Patients learn about their injury, prevention strategies, and proper body mechanics.
Improve overall fitness: Maintain or improve general physical condition during recovery.
Enjoy psychological benefits: Structured rehab can boost morale and motivation during the recovery process.
Benefit from personalized care: Programs are tailored to individual needs based on the specific injury and personal goals.
Many people choose “land-based” recovery plans, but is water better?
When people implement rehab programs, they often turn to resistance bands, yoga mats, and physical therapy exercises. Although these are helpful tools to regain strength and range of motion, water-based recovery programs can offer several advantages for certain injuries and conditions.
What are the 8 reasons to choose Liquid Cardio for rehab?
Liquid Cardio is a 60-minute class taught by certified instructors at the Paseo Club. It is a form of water aerobics that uses water and light weights to strengthen and mobilize while improving your cardio fitness. This class is for people of all fitness levels. You do not even need to be a swimmer to attend!
There are several benefits of rehabbing with Liquid Cardio.
1. Buoyancy
Water's buoyancy decreases stress on joints and injured tissues, reducing impact and aggravation of injured areas.
2. Resistance
Water provides natural resistance, allowing for strength training with a reduced risk of further injury.
3. Hydrostatic pressure
Improve your circulation and healing process with hydrostatic pressure. This pressure can help reduce swelling and improve blood flow.
4. Warmth
Warm water assists in pain reduction and reduces stiffness.
5. Support
Increase your range of motion with the supportive nature of water, allowing for easier movement.
6. Improve balance
Water's instability can help improve balance and coordination skills safely.
7. Low Impact
Water’s low-gravity environment is beneficial for those with weight-bearing restrictions.
8. Boosts your mood
Liquid Cardio supports your mental health. Being in the water, under the blue skies, with fun music, and surrounded by your community is a great way to start any day. These classes are fun and social and a great way to make friends through the club — a perfect antidote to dealing with the disappointment of having an injury.
Are there any risks to attending Liquid Cardio class?
Any recovery program needs to be approved by your health provider. They will assess several factors in deciding what plan is best for you, such as the type and severity of your injury, your overall health and fitness level, your specific rehabilitation goals, and personal preferences.
While water-based exercises are generally considered safe and beneficial for many types of injuries, there are some risks and potential contraindications to consider.
Common risks include the chance of overexertion, falling when getting in or out of the pool, and chlorine sensitivity.

Nursing a sprain, strain, or a more serious injury can be extremely frustrating and disappointing. Your activities are limited, and you are likely dealing with some pain.
Unfortunately for active people, these experiences are impossible to avoid entirely. But how you rehabilitate can make the difference between a speedy, thorough recovery and limping along at half-capacity.
Liquid Cardio is a supportive program for anyone who is looking to get stronger and more fit in a low-impact environment. Classes are taught six days per week and are free to attend with membership.
