8 Best places to buy activewear in the Santa Clarita Valley

November 21st, 2022 | 4 min. read

By Jen Azevedo

If you are a workout enthusiast like many of us at the Paseo Club you know that having the right clothes for exercising is not only important for looking your best, but it also helps your athletic performance.

Sweat, friction, repeat washing, and wearing degrade the fabric, seams, and shape of activewear. No matter how much you love those favorite leggings, tank tops, sports bras, or t-shirts, eventually, it is time to replace them.

The Paseo Club is a social club in the Santa Clarita Valley with eight acres of tennis and pickleball courts, gym facilities, and a junior-Olympic pool. We often are asked about what clothes are best for exercise and where to find them.

In this article, we will tell you what to look for when you shop for active apparel, what basics are important to have in your closet, and where the best places to buy workout clothes are in the Santa Clarita Valley.

What clothes do you need for exercising in the Santa Clarita Valley?

Women

The basics for women's workout clothes are:

 • Shorts
 • Gym socks
 • Shirts and tanks
 • Leggings or sweats
 • Sweatshirt or hoody
 • Supportive sports bras
 • Shoes specific to the workout

Men

Mens workout clothes should be composed of:

  • Shirts
  • Shorts
  • Gym socks
  • Pants or sweats
  • Sweatshirt or hoody
  • Shoes specific to the workout

What should you look for in activewear?

Exercise clothes have become a multibillion-dollar industry with all different price points available. And for good reason — we all want to look great when we train.

Whether you like subtle colors such as black, blue, and gray or want to go with more eye-catching colors, fabrics, or designs — there will be multiple options.

Always choose clothes that are comfortable and supportive. The garment should move with you as you bend, twist, and reach. Check that the seams don’t chafe or fit awkwardly, the length is correct, and you have a good range of motion.

When you shop for clothes to exercise in, select clothes not only based on style and fit but also on fabric.

Clothing made from fabric that wicks are best because it pulls moisture away from your body and keeps you feeling dry. Wicking fabric also dries quickly, so it does not become saturated and wet.

Best places to buy activewear in the Santa Clarita Valley

The Santa Clarita Valley has a diverse collection of shops that sell activewear. Below are the Paseo Club’s top favorites. The stores are in alphabetical order.

1. Big 5

Big 5 does not have a large selection of workout clothes, but sometimes you can find a few items. They sell both name brands and generic brands. They often have activewear from Adidas, Champion, and Active8. Overall, the clothing is very affordable. Use their coupons for additional discounts.

2. Bobbe

Bobbe is a local company that manufactures its clothing in Los Angeles. Founder Erica Anderson is committed to using sustainable materials while creating small-batch seasonally-designed activewear. All packaging is recyclable. You can find her clothes online or at pop-up sales throughout the area.

3. Dick’s Sporting Goods

Dick’s has a good selection of workout clothes with well-known name brands. Some are high quality, and some lower quality and less expensive. Look for deals on Nike, Under Armour, and Calia brand clothing. They have a decent shoe selection as well.

4. Kohls

Kohl’s sells a combination of name brands and generic brands. Always try to get a coupon at the store — don't ever pay full-price. Kohl's can be a great place when you are on a budget — they sell sweatpants and hooded sweatshirts for $25 and sports bras for $15.

5. Lululemon

When you think of super stylish, great-quality workout wear, Lululemon comes to mind. Their clothes last — as long as you take proper care of them. It is a higher-end store, so the clothes are more expensive. Be prepared to pay $80-130 for leggings.

6. Macy’s

There is not a great selection of workout clothes at Macy’s, but they have good brands. Look for Reebok, ID Ideology, Columbia, and others. You should always use a coupon at this store as well.

7. Runner’s Lane

The selection at Runner’s Lane is small, but they sell good brands. Be warned — their prices are on the higher side. They are also a reliable resource for shoes.

8. Target

Although the quality of the clothing is not as high at Target, they are consistently one of the most affordable options. Their selection varies, but they always have a few styles and colors of the basics — leggings, sports bras, tanks, t-shirts, etc.

Sometimes after they get a shipment of clothing, they have a good selection, but other times it is picked over. Ultimately, shopping at Target is hit or miss.

Final thoughts on workout clothes in the Santa Clarita Valley

Now that you have read this article, you have learned what type of clothing you need for exercise, what to look for when you buy new workout clothes, and where to find activewear in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The temperatures are cooling down, which makes it an important time of the year to wear layers. Be sure to begin with two to three layers when starting your exercise program or fitness class.

Shed extra clothing as you warm up, but put them back on as you do your cool-down routine. This system will minimize muscle soreness.

If you exercise outdoors, you want to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a visor or hat. Even in the winter, you can still sustain sun damage.

The Paseo Club offers over 60 fitness classes each week, including HIIT, Pilates, yoga, barre, cycling, and much more. You can see the schedule and sign up for your favorite class by going to the fitness calendar.
