Summer Nights in White, or more simply White Parties, have an eclectic history. It is said that Parisian François Pasquier was the first person to formally introduce the idea of White Parties in 1988 when he invited a few friends to a summer party, requesting they all wear white.

The concept of “Le Dîner en Blanc” grew in popularity as millionaire Michael Rubin adopted the idea and began to throw annual parties at his summer home in the Hamptons. Attendees included famous musicians, actors, and models. Each party — and every outfit — strived to top last year.

African-American and gay communities also began to host white parties. Some were star-filled soirees, such as the ones hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs. Other parties were fundraising platforms, particularly for HIV/AIDS treatment.

Now you can find parties in white all over the world, from Bangkok’s gay New Year’s Festival to cruise ships traveling through the Mediterranean.

White parties often happen in May to herald summer and begin the season of wearing white. Other Parties in White happen at summer’s end, to celebrate the last days of wearing white before Labor Day, the traditional cut-off date for white clothing.

White has always been considered a color of purity, elegance, and elevated status. People wear white at Wimbledon, on yachts, and as brides walking down the aisle.

White clothes have a high chance of being ruined, whether it is smear from your child’s jammy hands or spills from red wine. This makes dressing in white not everyday attire, but something special. Dressing in white provides a unique opportunity to focus on the fabric, design, and accessories of your outfit.
